Under 6's

PROGRAM FORMAT

To promote a safe acquisition of skills by players, the U6’s programme will be as follows:

• Girls and boys are welcome to play
• Friday afternoon only programme - 30 mins of skills followed by 30 mins of games
• Your child does not have to join a club - U6’s is run on a ‘pool’ basis to accommodate flexibility in numbers attending each week and to promote friendship amongst players
• Emphasise on safety and fun through teaching correct techniques and playing running rugby and scoring of tries
• Start with Tag only - commence with players “tagging” a player by touching the ball carrier with two hands at waist level - promotes safe tackle approach and correct roll to ground technique
• Staged transition to tackling - staged introduction of tackling after the first six weeks through teaching the five steps of a safe and effective tackle
• Tackling is Voluntary - any player NOT wishing to tackle / be tackled will wear an orange high-viz vest to identify them as a “Tag only” player. Note that games are played on very narrow fields (5 – 7 m wide) so that coaches can closely control the game.
• Coach to run on the field with the players to keep games moving and promote safety
• Junior Rugby sessions are smoke and alcohol free zones

TRAINING AND GAMES

Both training and games will be held on Friday afternoon at Stuart Park, Port Macquarie to make it easier for parents to get their children involved.

Times will be as follows:

• Training drills - 30 mins commencing at 5:00 pm
• Games - 30 mins commencing at 5:30 pm
• Session all finished by 6:00 pm - BBQ available from 5:30 pm for dinner

REGISTRATION

The Committee wants to keep costs as low as possible. U6’s Registration is only $95 which includes player insurance.

Registration sessions will be held at Stuart Park, Port Macquarie from 5:00 to 6:30 pm on the following Friday afternoons preceding the start of the season:

• Friday 29th of April.
• Friday 6th of May.

Uniform

Training t-shirts may be supplied subject to sponsor funding.

• Recommend wearing long sleeve shirt (no Hoodies)
• Preferred that children wear runners rather than boots
• Mouthguard, socks and shorts at player’s cost
• Mouthguard is compulsory. No mouth guard – no play.

Timeline

16 week Friday afternoon programme excluding holidays.

• No sessions during school holidays
• No session on Friday of June long weekend i.e. 10 June

Teams

Games will be 7 a side depending on numbers played on a narrow field to prevent wide running.

Children to be rotated through teams on a ‘pool’ basis to promote friendship & balanced teams.
